Phillipine Bakya Kubo

Phillipine Bakya Kubo

This type of shoe was traditionally made in the Phillipines for a long time, but the ones we see now were specially made for servicemen going home after World War II, when there was still a moratorium on leather and metal in shoes. You can see that these are made from fabric and wood with just a few nails attaching the uppers to the bases.

There are many wonderful versions of these individually handmade pieces of footwear, classically depicting its own version of a tropical hut and palm tree, painted fairly realistically. There are also humourous and commemorative versions, including sculpted packs of Pall Mall cigarettes and celebrations of V Day with big V's done in Olive green!
