I have begun offering Shoe Workshops at my studio in Silverlake each
season, the August ones are still open, and I'm asking people to
register interest for the Fall as well.
There are Beginning and Intermediate Workshops (for people who have
had shoe making experience) and we make shoes on our own feet, so most
likely you will make a Sandal or unstructured shoe. Yes, it is a Shoe
Making Workshop, more accurately it is an Unstructured Shoe Workshop
i.e. Sandals or Shoes that wrap over the foot without internal structure
(tap the toe and heel areas of most of your shoes and they are hard)
but it is not entirely Craft based.
The surprising thing is that the process of making this type of shoe is actually not as hard as people expect it to be, and the process of turning your idea into a workable and good shoe design is the hard part! I always say that it's all about the design, whereas the craft has a set of learning curves like any other skill, but this is hard for people to really grasp until they do it, so here we are!
I have posted a couple of photo albums of past students work for your viewing pleasure, there has been some great worn, you can check them out in the column at left!
If you are interested in taking a Shoe Workshop with me, send me an email about what your aims are, and we'll talk further.
